At NM Group, we have a thorough understanding of conductor temperature calculations and their importance in determining the thermal rating of a line. We have developed a new way of using weather data that significantly improves the accuracy of these calculations.
A new approach…
We use the latest equipment to detect extremely low wind speeds as well as global and diffuse solar radiation. This data is then used in association with established calculation techniques such as IEEE, CIGRE and TNSP to calculate the conductor temperature.
Increased accuracy is achieved using a transient step change approach. This delivers opportunities to increase line utilization and prevent unintended reductions in line reliability.
Our enhanced technique provides a more accurate representation of the true conductor position. This means:
- Increased asset utilization with no reduction in safety or reliability
- Line rating confirmations are more accurate
- Reduced clearance defect “false positives” reported
- Superior vegetation management and uprating services
Transient step change is now part of our utility asset services. Our technique can be applied to existing meteorological data or as stand alone calculation software.
