On August 20, 2007, NM Group officially began its independent journey following a management buyout from National Grid. Having just marked our 19th anniversary, I find myself reflecting not just on our own growth, but on the profound transformation of the utility sector as a whole.
The challenges utility companies face today are vastly different, and far more complex than they were nearly two decades ago. But as the landscape has shifted, so too has the technology we use to map, manage, and maintain the grid.
The Changing Face of the Industry
When we first launched, asset management and vegetation clearance relied heavily on manual inspections and static data. Today, the grid is under unprecedented pressure from extreme weather, decentralized renewables, and stricter regulations.
While it might not always feel like it to the end consumer, power utilities are making massive, critical investments to maintain the reliability of current and future networks. Driven by tight regulatory mandates and a core mission to make power more affordable, the industry is undergoing a massive digital transformation.
The conversation has shifted from “How do we collect this data?” to “How do we extract actionable insights to prevent outages, lower costs, and modernize the grid?”
