What training is available?

NM Group offer a range of geospatial and engineering training courses, designed specifically for engineers and those working on powerline engineering projects. The objective of our Use of LiDAR to improve reliability using PLS-CADD™ course is to demonstrate how to deliver better solutions within PLS-CADD™. The training modules provide both the practical know-how and theoretical understanding needed to better utilise this powerful piece of software.

Our engineering courses are created and delivered by Paul Richardson, NM Group’s Director of Engineering. Paul is a renowned power industry expert and long-time advocate of the use of CAD software for improving engineering designs. He is also a chartered civil engineer (BEng Hons, CEng, MICE), with more than 20 years’ experience in power line engineering.

Is the course aimed at beginner or advanced PLS-CADD users?

All levels of experience are catered for. We run an introduction course aimed at users with little or no knowledge of using LiDAR and PLS-CADD™ through to our intermediate and advanced course.

The training within each module  takes both a theoretical and a practical approach to learning, covering the key information and then working through real life exercises. The introduction course gives an initial examination in each subject and takes around two to three days to complete depending on the degree of customisation. Our intermediate/advanced course is more suitable for experienced users of PLS-CADD™ and is recommended to run for at least three days as more time is spent on each subject to give a thorough and detailed understanding.

What kind of topics are covered?

We have built a comprehensive syllabus of topics based on extensive experience. Depending on the desired learning goals, all courses can be fully customised to suit individual client requirements.

Normally a course will start by going through key terminology within the PLS-CADD™ software and ensuring that participants have a thorough overview of LiDAR and its function in PLS-CADD™ modelling. Participants will learn about setting electro-mechanical parameters and criteria, how to import LiDAR data, define feature codes and weather load cases and use cable files. Moving onto calculating thermal ratings and the use of PLS-CADD™ for re-rating and optimising the design of new lines. The uses of PLS Tower and PLS Pole are also covered.
