NM Group is now accepting applications for year in industry placement positions to start in Summer 2018. Lee Moorhead is a manager in our Production department and has been the driving force behind our internship scheme. Here, he shares some further detail:

Why did NM Group choose to offer internships?

NM Group has always offered opportunities to school leavers, university students and other young people, from Apprenticeships to Knowledge Transfer Partnership programmes. We have strong links with local universities, and our staff are made up of graduates from all over the world. We therefore recognise the importance of students experiencing the world of work; to see how theories and techniques studied at University are applied in industry.

There are also other benefits to offering year in industry placements. Interns are highly motivated, productive and want to get out there and start applying their knowledge. Even if they don’t return to the company after their degree, we believe participants of our internship scheme will be NM Group brand advocates.

What placements are on offer?

There are two positions available, both based at our Technology Centre in Knaresborough, North Yorkshire, UK. One for an Assistant Geospatial Processor, who will be working within one of our teams working on projects for DNOs. The other position will be part of one of our engineering teams, working as an Assistant CAD Engineer.  The successful applicants will work in these roles for the minimum time required by their institution for them to qualify for a year in industry. Extensions may also be offered at the end of the placements.

What will interns be doing day to day?

The interns will be working with infrastructure data from major utility clients all over the world. The Assistant Geospatial Processor will gain experience of LiDAR build, classification techniques and GIS software to help identify risk areas on powerlines. For example, establishing which trees may fall into the lines and cause and outage. The interns will also get experience in 3D software to create 3D environments for our client’s assets.

The Assistant CAD Engineer will be using LiDAR to create CAD models of power lines, using the software package, PLS-CADD™. This will provide valuable experience in the industry leading software for powerline modelling. Typical tasks might include identifying the maximum temperature a powerline can safely operate, looking at a structural assessment prior to engineering work or using terrain models to help route a brand new powerline project.
