Year in Industry - Jax
Based in our Technology Center in Knaresborough, Gnanarajah Sanujayan (Jax) is completing a Year in Industry Internship at NM Group. Here he shares his experience so far:
So how did you find out about the internship opportunity at NM Group?
I found out the opportunity from my lecturer, he sends around different opportunities and events that are relevant and I stumbled upon the email regarding a chance to work outside of London.
How are you finding working at NM Group?
I really enjoy working with the team. Not just for the work aspect but also the social aspects. Everyone is willing to help or explain something to me at any time. Training has been focused on PLS-CADD for powerline projects. Things like PLS Import, PLS modeling and setting up projects etc. The team have been great, aiding me a lot and answering my questions.
Are you finding that the experience that you have gained so far is going to be useful for your future career and in what way do you think it will be useful?
I really hope so, I really like CAD work and have been doing it since GCSE so using it on live projects shows me a different side to it. The main thing I have gained so far is the importance of teamwork when working on live projects, and communicating with all the departments has been great and I know will help me in the future.

What do you want to achieve in your year in industry?
I want to increase my knowledge on networks and powerlines. I am also hoping that I will be able to use some of the more advanced knowledge, around reducing risk and loss, for my University project. My project is looking at nerve signal transmission for machines, such as prosthetics! Although very different industries, I hope some of what I learn from NM Group’s engineers will help me with this goal.
Living in Knaresborough is obviously different from living in London, how are you finding the transition?
The office was not the big transition. The big change was moving from a big busy city to a quiet town. What I like most is that is has so much character. I live near the market area, so there is a great atmosphere. The people are in the town are really nice and spend time to talk and help which is different from London where they are in a rush and it's hard to have a conversation with anyone.
Would you recommend NM Group to Uni students looking for a year in industry?
I have been here for over two months now and I can happily say I would recommend to others and have also mentioned this to my lecturer too.
