NM Group is currently surveying a 13,000 km transmission network across New South Wales as part of an annual bushfire safety program. Since 2020, NM Group has been working with the client to enhance network safety, and the company has once again been selected through a competitive tender process to conduct this critical work. With extensive experience in aerial LiDAR surveying and data analysis, NM Group plays a key role in mitigating bushfire risks and ensuring the ongoing protection of the transmission network.

Surveying for Bushfire Safety
As part of the client’s bushfire safety program, NM Group is conducting annual LiDAR surveys to assess vegetation encroachments and other potential risks to the transmission network. These surveys are a vital part of an ongoing effort to maintain a safe and resilient network, particularly during the high-risk bushfire season.

The surveys are instrumental in identifying areas where vegetation may impact safety zones or contribute to fire risks. This proactive approach not only mitigates the threat of bushfires but also safeguards critical infrastructure and surrounding communities.

Key Activities in the Survey Program:

  • Annual Aerial LiDAR Surveys: Fixed-wing aircraft are being used to carry out high-resolution LiDAR surveys of the 13,000 km transmission network, focusing on areas where vegetation may encroach upon essential safety clearance zones.
  • Data Analysis and Reporting: The collected data is processed and analyzed by NM Group’s GIS and engineering teams, providing actionable insights that inform decision-making and enable targeted vegetation management efforts.

These surveys offer real-time data, ensuring the rapid identification and response to potential fire hazards. The efficiency in processing and analyzing the data guarantees that the network remains safe throughout the year.

Commitment to Network Safety
Through its ongoing partnership with one of Australia’s largest utilities, NM Group continues to play a crucial role in identifying and addressing risks before they escalate into threats to the transmission network and the surrounding communities. By leveraging the latest technology and expertise, NM Group is committed to enhancing the resilience and safety of the network for years to come.
